The event, at Paprika Park, featured a football match including several ex-professionals as well as a live music set from multi-instrumentalist Darren "Daz" Sims, a raffle, an auction, hot food and various other young singers too.
The money raised will go to Skemer Winters, a Knowle West boxing legend whose work in keeping kids off the streets through the sport is well known. Skemer is currently in the process of setting up another gym in new premises and the money will go to buying materials to kit the gym out.
Skemer was at the Park yesterday along with a couple of his young professional boxers that played in the match. Former Bristol City stars Scott Murray, Louis Carey and Colin Cramb turned out in the game which featured fifteen goals, not entirely shared out equally! Many local players also played some or all of the match which was blessed with bright sunshine, welcome considering the previous two days rainfall.
Afterwards, Daz, who also played in the game, performed a live set in the clubhouse accompanied by youngsters Cassidy, Lewis, Ruby and Kyah at various stages. The raffle, hot food and auction all added up to a sizeable donation to the cause.
Daz, speaking today said "I'd like to say a big thank you to the following people...
Finally, a thank you all who donated prizes, money, their time and who helped in anyway, we can't list everyone but big thanks to all. This will be a big help to Skemer Winters' new gym which helps keep the kids off the street and his anti-bullying campaign.
Hengrove Atlhetic would also like to thank photographer Jiri Kolar for kindly allowing us to use his images on here. If you'd like to see a big gallery of images from yesterday's match, go to Darren Sims' Facebook page.
