Hengrove Athletic are delighted to announce that Sean Day has been appointed as reserve team manager ahead of the coming 2022/23 season.

Sean, who will be ably assisted by number two Nilton Crane, takes over the reserves in their first season after reforming and will lead the side in the Bristol & Suburban League Senior Division.

The vastly experienced Day, who celebrated his 51st birthday yesterday by watching Hengrove's first team draw 2-2 at Keynsham, is excited about the job ahead of him. "I'm incredibly hungry for the challenge and really enthusiastic" he said. "I'm full of energy and I want my team to be the same, to go out there and play some good stuff. We'll aim to do well as a team for the club and if it takes us somewhere as well, then that's a bonus."

The new man isn't really the "new" man at all though, having joined Hengrove as a 16-year-old back in the day. After leaving Norton Lane eighteen months later, the striker then played for several local clubs including Keynsham Town, Brislington, Bishop Sutton and Bitton before receiving the call to help out at the K's youth section.

"My brother in law was running the u-18's and asked me to assist him. I went down there and eventually took the side over; I knew of Mike (Greatbanks, Hengrove's chairman) as he ran their u-18's at the time. Later, I took the Keynsham first team over and also spent time managing Avonmouth & Bristol City Junior Supporters Club."

His playing career also featured spells in local football with Hartcliffe Old Boys and Broad Plain but Day believes managing is more his cup of tea, particularly young players. "I was a decent player, don't get me wrong, but I'm a better manager. My pedigree is in developing youth and I can't wait to get started; my sole goal is to get players ready for when Jamie (Hillman, first team manager) comes calling. I want us to have a conveyor belt of talent coming through and Nilton & I have the job of getting them up to speed. Nilton is, for me, one of the most knowledgeable people I've ever come across in football."

Everyone at Hengrove would like to officially welcome Sean & Nilton to the club and wish both men all the very best of luck for the forthcoming season.
