Goals from skipper Dan Wise and Matt Garner gave the Wasps a two goal half time advantage and further strikes from Liam Irwin & Connor Williams in the second half saw the hosts home as they bid to reach the end of season playoffs. For the young Grove side, they remain in fourteenth spot with just six games of the season remaining.
With Wincanton's pitch currently unavailable, Gillingham Town's Woodwater Lane was the venue for this Division One clash that had been originally scheduled for early January but had been postponed. No such issues yesterday as bright sunshine greeted the two sides with Wasps captain Dan Wise celebrating his 700th senior game. And it was the milestone man himself that opened the scoring when Wincanton were awarded a questionable penalty for a foul by Will Banks, the skipper finishing into the bottom right hand corner.
Grove gloveman Carl Bush guessed right for the spot kick but was unable to keep it out but he did produce two fantastic saves to deny Tom Richardson and Connor Williams before the interval. However from the second of those saves that conceded a corner, Matt Garner rose highest to head home on 43 minutes to double Wincanton's lead.
After the break, Williams almost scored immediately with an effort that smacked the crossbar before he then set up Liam Irwin for number three, Irwin slotting it past Bush after a run from Williams. And it was Connor Williams who grabbed the fourth when Jamie Thompson broke through and squared for his team mate to wrap the game up.
